This painting was completed en plein air at the Mississippi Earthtones Festival Plein Air Competition in Alton in 2008. It is a popular icon in Alton. The original Piasa Bird was a petroglyph, a pictorial carving gauged into the surface of the rock. Native American legend said that this man-eating bird devoured whole villages and was greatly feared. The painting is framed.
